Wally Nano – the 36-footer from Monaco
10/2008 –
A CLASSIC LOOK REVISITED
Launched on July 23rd 2008 in Antalya, Turkey, the 1st Wally Nano arrived in Cap d’Ail this summer. Biancaneve (Italian for Snow White) was presented to the public at the Cannes boat show. With her pastel pink hull with a thin black line emerging just above the waterline, this latest model from the Monaco brand is quite simply magnificent. The straight bow is fitted with a carbon bowsprit and this combined with the very long fantail makes for a captivating overall effect. The low coachroof blends perfectly with the teak deck, and the pastel pink tones are repeated inside the cockpit and along the bulwarks. When NauticNews stepped onboard during the Cannes International Boat & Yacht Show, we spent more than a few magic moments imagining life at this day sailer’s helm. She has smooth classic lines, and the long fantail places the helm about a quarter of the way up Biancaneve’s long deck, ideal for sunbathing.
At the helm
All the necessary information for navigation is accessible from the helm. There is a compass fitted into the deck at the helmsman feet, and 2 electronic displays on the mast indicate speed, wind and depth. The Wally Nano is specifically designed for single-handed manoeuvres, and there are two buttons behind the helmsman to control the lines. She is also fitted with the “Magic Trim” system, developed by Carboni since 1998, which allows hydraulic control of the Mainsail, the Genoa and the North Sails Full Carbon 3DL. There is not a line or halyard to be seen. The deck and cockpit are totally uncluttered, and as for the functional interior, it comprises two bench seats, a toilet and a small forward cabin.
A Nano cup in Monaco?
Dutch naval architect Andre Hoek and Wally’s director Luca Bassani have designed this 36-footer with classic lines and a retro look. Inspired by the vast Pilgrim project for a 200-foot superyacht, the Nano is visually stunning. Production of one unit per month is planned, so by 2009, there should be 7 units in the fleet, which means a regatta could be organised. The Monegasque company’s intention is to create a new monotype that could participate in the top regattas, and so far everything indicates that they are sure to succeed.
