On July 25th 2007, the Sly 42 was one of the 5 nominees for the German magazine “Yacht’s” European Boat of the Year award, but at the Cannes show last year it was the fun version that stole everyone’s hearts with its racy lines and sleek, honed down look. The flagship of the Italian shipyard Sly Yachts, based in Cesena in north east Italy, the model is the opus of a manufacturer that was created in 2005 to build yachts that combine strong design features, comfort and speed. Designed by Studio Lostuzzi, with the interior and exterior living areas by Stefano Pastrovich, the Sly 42 fun is the epitome of modern sailing, where speed and fun are equally important.

An incredible look

The elegance and understatement of the Sly 42 fun made a distinct impression when the model was officially unveiled. The fibreglass and carbon hull is long and slim, and the uncluttered teak deck is welcoming and spacious. The aft deck has a convenient 4 m² bathing deck, then there are two helm stations aft of the cockpit, which is fitted with two 2.55 m L-shaped bench seats with tables that can be raised and lowered. The two sides of the carbon coachroof protect against spray and are used to stow the bimini top which can be raised on 4 pistons. The bimini has a canopy meaning that it can be kept up when sailing. With all the rigging also made of carbon, the Sly 42 fun is quite simply a feast for the eyes.

Comfort and speed

Even with so much thought going into the boat’s aesthetics, functionality has not been forgotten. All rigging used for regular manoeuvres reels to below deck or under the coachroof and up to the two winches located to the fore of the helm stations, making the Sly 42 fun very easy to handle. Easy but fast. With her 47 m² Genoa sheet with a 108% overlap and her 64 m² mainsail, the 42-footer is light (5.9 tons) and takes off at the first gust of wind. The generous sail plan, reduced displacement and efficient hull design all guarantee high performance even in the light winds of the Mediterranean. All of which was confirmed in June 2007 when a Sly 42 took 6th place at the Giraglia Rolex Cup, whilst a Sly 53 – the shipyard’s latest model – recorded the 3rd fastest compensated time in the Muggia/Porto Rose race. Clearly, for the Italian manufacturer, comfort and fun are far from incompatible with speed.
