Voiles d’Antibes 2007
05/2007 –
The Voiles d’Antibes are back.
From May 30th to June 3rd 2007, the Mediterranean yachting season opens, as every year, with the Voiles d’Antibes. The event is now the first stage of the Trophée Panerai and since 1996 has marked the annual return of these prestigious yachts.
After a tough winter season, like migrating birds, the classic yachts return each year to their Mediterranean shores. From May 30th to June 3rd 2007, the first sails of the busy 2007 season will be unfurled in Antibes, which became part of the Trophée Panerai last year, joining the prestigious events in Argentario, Mahon, Porto Rotondo and Cannes, which are expected to draw a record-breaking 300 yachts this year.
First races of the year.
The Voiles d’Antibes – Trophée Panerai are the first regattas in the International Mediterranean Committee’s 2007 championships. There will be 4 categories competing: Vintage (built before 1950), Classic (before 1976), Spirit of Tradition and Metric 6, 8 and 12 MJI (which raced in the Americas Cup between 1958 and 1987). In the Epoque Aurique, the 46-metre gaff-rig cutter Lulworth, beautifully restored and back on the circuit since last autumn, will certainly not go unnoticed. Nor will the 38-metre schooner Orion, or Moonbeam IV, Mariquita, Marigold, Wayward, and the oldest of them all (1897) Jap and Lulu. In the Epoque Marconi class, Cambria and last year’s winner Cottom Blossom II will come head to head with The Blue Peter and Mariella in a showdown that is sure to delight the crowds.
Antibes, with the largest fort in Europe, celebrates spring.
As the first major regatta of the season, the Voiles d’Antibes – Trophée Panerai 2007 promises to be a show to remember. As well as the 23 km coastal route between the Bays of Antibes and Juan-les-Pins and the Match-Races between the Metric competitors, there will also be a festive village open to all throughout the entire 5 day event. Sailors
and spectators will gather around the numerous exhibitions and special events to celebrate the fact that spring is in the air and the “Voiles” are back.
