Monaco Classic Week 2005 : elegant old ladies
From September 13th to 18th, the Mediterranean’s finest yachts gather in the bay of Monaco.
Since it was founded in 1994, the Monaco Classic Week has always reached the height of excellence. Every two years, the Monaco Yacht Club offers an outstanding line-up of all the Mediterranean has to offer in the way of prestigious classic sail and motor yachts. This year, the seventh edition is no exception, with the finest examples of classic yachting gathering to celebrate the Tuiga‘s tenth anniversary flying Monegasque colours.
Flagship
In 1995, the Monaco Yacht Club acquired Tuiga, the magnificent 15 Metre JI designed in 1909 by William Fife. 22.5 metres long on deck, with 370 square meters of sail area, Tuiga has become the Principality’s ambassador at sea. This gaff rigged racing yacht is considered to be one of the most beautiful in the world, and for her tenth anniversary in Monaco, the Principality is rolling out the red carpet, with a photo exhibition, a book of the yacht’s history with previously unpublished paintings and plans, and a limited edition Hublot chronograph all in her honour. For the Monaco Yacht Club, this year’s Monaco Classic Week will be a tribute to its flagship.
The programme
The Classic Week opens on September 13th, with the J Class challenge starting at 11 a.m. the next day. Shamrock V, the most senior challenger, Ranger and Velsheda, three of the four yachts existing in this class, will race in the bay accompanied by the two 23-metre Candida and Cambria, adjusted to fit the legendary J Class. These five competitors have written some of the finest pages of the history of the Admiral’s Cup.
Thursday September 15th will mark the start of three days of vintage and classic yachts regattas. Tuiga will be in the company of others such as the 28-metre Sumurun (1914), another Fife design, Orion (1910), racing after nearly three years of restoration work, the 43-metre, three-masted Xarifa, and Eleonora, a 49-metre schooner.
With such prestigious competitors, the Monaco Classic Week is sure to achieve its goals of elegance and excellence.
