To celebrate its 20th anniversary, Lagoon, a subsidiary of Bénéteau, is launching its Lagoon 440, the first of a new generation. The Lagoon 440 contains some genuine innovations. From the fly deck to the shape of the hull, architects Vincent Lauriot-Prévost and Marc Van Peteghem have once again shown what they are worth.

Deck.

The surprisingly high boom leaves room for the type of fly deck usually found on larger catamarans (cf. Sunreef 74). Behind the helmsman, a bench seat with panoramic view sits 6 people. All the navigation equipment (lines, halyards, reef pendants etc) converges upon this elevated wheelhouse. The main cockpit at the stern is for relaxation only, although the mainsheet can be slackened from here if necessary. Another safety feature are the guardrails running all around the boat.

Interior.

Catamarans generally come with bright, well-lit saloons, but the Lagoon 440 is even brighter, thanks to its large vertical portholes. The same goes for the cabins, which have small, bay windows. The L-shaped galley is well-located with a hatch for passing dishes to the cockpit. The wheelhouse however is further away, at the back of the saloon. The charter version comes with 4 double cabins and the owner’s version with three.

The latest innovation is the gull-wing shape of the bridgedeck. This system breaks the waves and makes for smoother sailing when hauled close. The two 40 hp diesel engines are installed aft of the tillers for better soundproofing.This top class catamaran is synonymous with luxury and safety.
